How to Find Competitor Keywords and Increase Your Traffic
Find out what keywords your Competitors are using to drive traffic to their website.
You’ll be able to establish a list of missing keywords so you can fill gaps in your own site’s content strategy.
Make a List of Key Competitors
- Add the competitors you know
- Google search your main services + your location – check who is coming up.
- Check what competitors are listed in domain overview.
Do Organic Research for Each Competitor
- Domain Analytics > Organic Research
- Pull out their top keywords by % of total traffic
- Manually browse your competitors website – check their individual Services pages or individual products or category pages to see what they have but you are missing.
Check the Keyword Gap tool on SEM Rush
- Enter your own site domain and up to four of your competitors
- The tool offers a side by side comparison between keyword profiles
Check Google Ads Search Queries
- Go to your Search Queries report and check to see there are any search terms resulting in conversions that you are missing.
- These may come from dynamic search ads or phrase match keywords which present new keyword
Once you’ve established a list, ask yourself; Do any of these keywords apply to my business objectives ? If yes, do you currently have page set up on your site for this keyword? Often times your site might mention this keyword briefly in a broad service page but there’s not a dedicated page set up that ranks well and brings in organic traffic.
Following the process will give you a roadmap for future website content and ensure that whatever you are adding to your website has search demand.
